Over 30 people joined us on Saturday, February 25th for a lively and instructive four-hour transition workshop. The afternoon event included presentations from psychologist Dr. Julie Steck, postsecondary disability specialist Dr. David Parker, school psychologist Nancy Lindhjem, and assistive technology specialist Beth Waite, all from CRG. Parents, students, and professionals learned about college options for students with disabilities, how to find effective academic services on campus, choosing a major/career that is matched to your personality and interests, and how to use technology to stay organized and in touch.
The workshop concluded with insightful comments from a college sophomore and a college graduate now pursuing graduate school, both of whom use CRG services. They discussed their transition experiences, the strategies they have used to manage their time and facilitate their learning, and how college gave them new opportunities to understand and accept the impact of their disability. Participants gave high marks on the evaluation form. Here’s a sampling of some responses to the question: “What was the most helpful part of the workshop?”
- Should be of great help to others!
- Myriad of information available that we were previously unaware of.
- Continued learning/knowledge about ADHD. Seeing my daughter speak – what a blessing as a mother. Thank you for allowing her this opportunity. Thank you to all at CRG – you have advanced her giftedness and success in life!
- Learning about different programs and applications one can use to succeed in school.
- Knowing others had the same problems.
We are pursuing ways to offer this workshop again, including bringing it to area schools to make it easier for students, educators, and parents to attend. If you have any ideas for making this happen, please call CRG at (317) 575-9111. To get a taste of “Taste of College,” take a look at the opening session’s PowerPoint slides.
