When there is a question of whether or not autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an appropriate diagnosis, there are many tools that are used in an evaluation. The gold-standard measure used for assessing autism symptoms is called the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – Second Edition (ADOS-2). Unlike other standardized tests used in a psychoeducational testing, the ADOS-2 is an interactive, semi-structured observation in which behaviors are observed across areas of:
- Verbal and nonverbal communication
- Social interactions
- Play skills/creativity
- Restricted or repetitive behaviors
The administration of the ADOS-2 is not used alone to diagnose autism spectrum disorder but is used in conjunction with information gathered during an intake interview, behavioral rating scales, or other observations during testing. The ADOS-2 can be used with individuals as young as 12 months old through adulthood.
How Long Does an ADOS-2 Take? Will I Be Able to Watch My Child Participate?
An administration of the ADOS-2 typically takes 45 minutes to one hour. For young children, or children who are nonverbal, one parent is typically present during the administration to observe. In some situations, the examiner may even ask the parent to interact with their child in some way to be observed. For older children, or children who are verbally fluent, parents are not in the room. Results from the ADOS-2 are written up and included in the report and described to the family at the follow-up appointment.
Where Can I Learn More Information?
Call CRG at (317) 575-9111, Option 3 to contact our Intake Coordinator. ADOS-2 testing can be completed as part of a stand-alone evaluation to clarify the presence of autism spectrum disorder or added on to a full psychoeducational evaluation if there is concern for autism spectrum in addition to other learning, attention, or mood concerns.
