"Hidden" Disabilities: What's Beneath the Surface of Successful Transitions to College? (March 11-12, 2010)
Co-sponsored by Midwest Academy
How can professionals and families support students with Asperger's, psychiatric disabilities such as anxiety and depression, and/or ADHD as they prepare for and transition to college?
A variety of experts will present "best practice" information for parents, school personnel, post-secondary disability service providers and the diagnostic community. Presenters will help participants:
- Understand how procedural guidelines, philosophies/goals, legal issues, and resources can vary greatly from "culture" to "culture."
- Learn how families can communicate positively with schools/colleges while supporting students' growing independence and self-advocacy.
- Appreciate ways that students with "hidden" disabilities can care for themselves and find success in college.
- Gain more information about the development of post-secondary services for students with "hidden" disabilities in a truly different culture (Japan).
Dr. Jane Thierfeld Brown, Disability Coordinator for the University of Connecticut School of Law and co-author of "Students with Asperger Syndrom: A Guide for College Personnel" (2009, Autism Asperger Publishing Company), will be the keynote speaker.
Conference will also feature speeches by Dr. Haruo Shinoda, Rissho University (Tokyo), and Dr. Tomone Takahashi, Shinshu University (Nagano).
Conference will be held at The Marten House located at 1801 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
